What exactly is Anxiety? Anxiety is defined as emotional, physical, and behavioral symptoms that involve worry, fear, or panic. An estimated 2.5 million Americans suffer from Anxiety in a wide variety of forms. Most of us have experienced Anxiety at various times in our lives, but for some, those feelings do not subside once the stressor that caused the Anxiety is removed. When Anxiety becomes frequent, excessive, and overwhelming, it’s time to reach out for help. Talking with a Licensed Therapist is a great place to start.
The majority of my clients come to therapy because they want to alleviate their Anxiety symptoms without medication. Below are some natural ways to start reducing Anxiety:
1.) Breathe- When we are stressed, we’re taking shallow, quick breaths that deprive our brains and bodies of oxygen. Try taking deep slow breaths, inhaling and exhaling to the count of five. Practice deep breathing throughout your day, and especially when you’re feeling stressed.
2.) Exercise- At least 2 to 3 times per week for 20 to 30 minutes each time. You don’t need an expensive gym membership, even going for a 20 minute walk around your neighborhood can help.
3.) Sleep- I found out after my daughter was first born that there is nothing more important than a good nights rest. Sleeping 7 to 9 hours per night is essential for mentally and physically healing yourself.
4.) Eliminate or vastly reduce Caffeine- Most of us feel like we must have Caffeine to make it through our hectic days. However, caffeine impacts our bodies and brains in ways you might not be aware of. Caffeine raises your heart rate, which in turn activates our “flight or fight” responses, just like Anxiety. If you can’t totally cut it out, try to stick to just one caffeinated beverage earlier in the day.
5.) Eat whole, unprocessed foods- Your body and brain need wholesome nutrition to function properly. Aim to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, and protein at each meal. If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, or the ingredient list is a mile long, it may be best to find a healthier choice.
6.) Practice Gratitude- Start a gratitude journal! Write down at least three things each day you are thankful for in your life.
7.) Talk therapy- Therapy is a natural way to identify and address the stressors in your life!
